When the “Stuff” Feels Like Too Much

Note from Jamie

I like to share things that light me up, fill me with joy, and make my life easier. Nothing is sponsored. These are just things that are helping me along my journey.

When the “Stuff” Feels Like Too Much

Lately, I’ve been feeling completely overwhelmed by stuff.

Not just physical stuff—though there’s plenty of that. (Papers piled on the counter, a house that needs a deep clean, weeds taking over the yard, appointments waiting to be scheduled.)

It’s also the digital stuff. Emails. Messages. Notifications. All asking me to do, decide, fix, or follow up.

And then there’s the invisible stuff. The mental and emotional load of trying to hold my family together, making sure my daughter has what she needs to thrive, showing up for people who want me here and there and everywhere.

AGHHHHH!!! Overwhelmed doesn’t even begin to describe it.

The other day, I journaled about why I feel buried under so much. And here’s what I realized:

  • I think things will bring me joy.
  • I want to uncover opportunities amongst the stuff.
  • I don’t want to deal with things.
  • I don’t have energy for big responses.
  • I don’t want to face financial realities because then hard decisions would need to be made.

In the middle of my journaling, I asked God if I should start with the hard things or the easy things—so I could at least build momentum.

The response I felt in my heart was:

“Perhaps, neither. Perhaps, you’re missing the point. You think that crossing things off your list will lead to more meaning. I’m inviting you to look at it in reverse. What do you want? Then, define your course of action.”

That stopped me in my tracks.

Because when I really think about it, I don’t want a perfectly clean house, an empty inbox, or a flawless to-do list. I want a slow life. An intentional life. A life of meaning and love.

And if that’s what I want, then maybe I don’t need to do all the things. I don’t need to find new homes for every item. I don’t need to donate every magazine or coupon to the “right” person. I don’t need to write long replies every time someone reaches out. I can just… let go.

That realization doesn’t erase the overwhelm. But it shifts it.

Now, instead of asking “What do I have to do?” I’m asking, “What do I want my life to feel like?”

And here’s where I’m starting: adding just a little more structure. Not a military-style schedule (that’s not me). But simple anchors for my day and my family’s day—so that instead of drowning in stuff, I can begin to gently strip away what no longer serves us.

I don’t have all the answers yet. But I’m committed to exploring this. To slowly choosing intention over overwhelm. To letting go instead of piling on.

Maybe you’re in this place too? If so, take a breath with me. We don’t have to do it all. We just have to begin—slowly, gently, in alignment with what we really want.

xoxo,

Jamie

Stuffed Acorn Squash

This dish is fall on a plate—sweet, savory, cozy, and oh-so satisfying.

Caramelized onions, crisp apples, sweet Italian sausage, spinach, and fresh herbs are tucked into roasted acorn squash and finished under the broiler for a golden touch.

It’s wholesome, flavorful, and guaranteed to impress (everyone at my table loved it!).

I hope it brings the same comfort and joy to your kitchen this season.
