Letting Go of Comparison 🌿

Letting Go of Comparison 🌿

It’s so easy to measure ourselves against others—kids, homes, careers, even wardrobes. I was reminded of this recently while visiting friends who are financially better off than us. Sometimes, I catch myself feeling like I need to prove my worthiness around them. Which is silly, of course, because they love me just as I am. What’s interesting is that they actually envy parts of my life: my slow mornings, my mindfulness and journaling practices, my dedication to fitness, my time at home with family.

It was such a good reminder that we don’t always see the full picture.

This summer, after my sister passed away, I let our yard go wild. The weeds took over, and I felt embarrassed. My neighbor, who has the most beautiful landscaping, gifted me a “forget-me-not” plant in honor of my sister. She even came over and planted it herself. At first, I wanted to shrink with shame that she was seeing my messy yard. But instead, I chose to focus on her kindness—and even asked her advice. She taught me which plants needed what, and she told me I had great soil. What a gift it was to learn from her, simply because I let go of my need to appear perfect.

And then there’s fashion. I used to dress up every day for work. Now, my wardrobe is simple: shorts, sweatshirts, lounge pants. I only put on makeup for Nourish events. Part of me misses being stylish and polished, but right now, my priorities are elsewhere. Comfort matters more. Ease matters more. When I catch myself feeling envious of women who look effortlessly put together, I remind myself: my smile is my best accessory. And that never goes out of style.

Comparison is tempting, but it always distracts us from our own blessings. Having more money might sound nice—but what would the trade-offs be? A polished wardrobe might feel fun—but would I be as comfortable?

We each have our own mix of gifts and challenges. Instead of focusing on someone else’s blessings, I’m choosing to focus on mine.

And that feels like enough.

Jamie
