There Is So Much Going Right

There Is So Much Going Right
Last week, after a pretty powerful storm, we lost power for 14 hours.
And, boy, did I realize how much I take for granted.
We have a generator, which meant our fridge, freezer, and sump pump continued to run. But otherwise? No lights. No Internet. No appliances. No casually flipping a switch and expecting something to happen.
Except, let's not be silly.
I definitely unplugged the fridge for 10 minutes so I could plug in the coffee maker and make my very necessary morning coffee.
And I had a disproportionate amount of gratitude for that cup of coffee.
I was also incredibly grateful for running water. I worked out using my cell phone and then took a wonderfully relaxing shower.
In the afternoon, I headed up to the Nourish production facility to get some work done, which made me extra grateful for that space.
And for all of the people and resources around me that support me, encourage me, and love me.
It got me thinking about gratitude.
Sometimes, it takes something going wrong to remind us how much is going right.
Take the yellow jackets at one of my farmers markets these past two weeks.
They have been TERRIBLE.
At any given time, there were probably 5–10 yellow jackets buzzing around my booth. And I'm allergic to wasp stings, so let's just say I was not feeling particularly peaceful about the situation.
But I found myself incredibly grateful for two things:
First, I don't actually encounter that many wasps in the rest of my outdoor life.
And second, after nearly six hours of being constantly surrounded by them, I left without a single sting.
Grateful.
And even in the really big things, I see the good.
When I think about losing my sister last year, my heart is full of gratitude.
I'm grateful for the time she gave us to soak her up, love on her, and be loved on by her.
I'm grateful for her unwavering bravery and strength during that time.
I'm grateful for the way our village showed up for her. Showed up for my parents. Showed up for me.
I miss my sister so much. There is no gratitude that erases that.
But somehow, my heart can hold both.
I can miss her terribly and still feel overflowing gratitude for all that I had with her.
For the memories. For the laughter. For the love.
For the gift of having her as my sister.
And for the way she continues to feel close to me.
I think that's the thing about gratitude.
It doesn't mean everything is good. It doesn't mean we don't feel disappointment, sadness, frustration, or grief.
It means we can notice the good alongside all of it.
This morning, a friend and I met for breakfast, and we were talking about how grateful we are for the status quo.
That really stuck with me.
I'm grateful that my parents are doing well.
I'm grateful that Nourish is running smoothly.
I'm grateful that I'm not managing a significant crisis.
I'm grateful that my family is healthy.
I'm grateful that I woke up feeling good.
I'm grateful that my body mostly does what I ask it to do.
I'm grateful that I have wonderful people around me.
Of course, I'll always be grateful for the big things. The surprise delights. The exciting opportunities. The moments that make you stop and think, Wow. Look at this life.
But I'm becoming increasingly mindful of how much of my life is simply… good.
Most things go right for me most of the time.
And I think that's worth noticing.
When something goes wrong, I'm bummed out, of course. Sometimes I'm frustrated. Sometimes I'm disappointed. Sometimes I need to have a little pity party.
But more and more, those moments remind me just how blessed I am that most things do go right.
I consider myself pretty good at showing appreciation. I frequently thank Carolyn, our mail carrier, for going above and beyond for me. I try often to appreciate my teammates. I thank the people who show up for Nourish. I notice the people who make my life easier, better, kinder.
One of my favorite mantras is:
You find what you're looking for, so look for the good.
And I really believe that.
The more thankful I am, the more I find to be thankful for.
I sometimes feel sad for the chronic complainers. The people who seem to never see the good. The people who always feel like victims of their circumstances.
I wonder if perhaps they're not finding much good because they're not looking for it.
Because there is so much to notice.
This past week was a beautiful reminder of that for me.
I'm grateful for the big things.
I'm grateful for the little things.
I'm grateful for electricity and Internet and hot showers and morning coffee.
I'm grateful for my family.
I'm grateful for my work.
I'm grateful for my home.
I'm grateful for my body.
I'm grateful for my people.
I'm grateful for the status quo.
I'm grateful for the sister I was lucky enough to have—and for the love that remains.
Because yes, there are things that annoy us. Things that hurt. Things that don't go the way we hoped.
But at any given moment, there is so much more going right.
Nature is doing what nature does.
Electricity is flowing.
The Internet is letting us do our thing.
Our families are here.
Our bodies are working.
Our people are showing up.
And maybe gratitude isn't about having a life where everything is good.
Maybe it's about remembering that even when something isn't good, there is still so much good.
xoxo,
Jamie

Recipe of the Week
Hearty Autumn Salad with Chicken & Maple-Dijon Dressing
I love this salad.
It’s colorful, hearty, incredibly flavorful, and packed with vegetables.
I made it Monday night and happily ate it again for lunch Tuesday and dinner Wednesday.
Yep—it’s that good.
The roasted delicata squash, crunchy Brussels sprouts, apples, pomegranate, pecans, and maple Dijon dressing are such a delicious combination.
Definitely one to add to your fall rotation!
Live well. Be kind.
