The Beauty of Neighborhood Connection

Note from Jamie

The Beauty of Neighborhood Connection

Earlier this week, three neighborhood ladies and I got together to hang out, get to know each other better, and connect. We see each other on walks and our kids go to school together, but I was craving a night of uninterrupted time—a night to really pour into each other.

We each brought snacks to share, opened a bottle of wine, and talked for hours. We laughed, shared frustrations, and yes, gossiped a little. It was lovely.

It reminded me of Sweet Magnolias, one of my favorite shows on Netflix—friends gathering to connect, support, and lift one another up. My little get-together felt like my own version of that.

Connection has been a theme for me lately. A friend recently told me she wants to buy a picnic table and set it up in the empty lot across from her house. Her dream? Neighbors stopping by for impromptu chats.

Another friend and Nourish customer shared that she likes to do small acts of kindness “just because”—she writes a handwritten card and gifts a Nourish Lip Balm. How sweet is that?

I’ve found little ways to do the same. I love magazines but hate throwing them away, so I pass them along to my neighbors Becky and Sarah. I stick a Post-It on the cover that simply says, “Enjoy!” It’s short and sweet, which means I don’t overthink it and actually follow through.

At Christmastime, I tuck a bottle of our Holiday Cheer Room Spray into the mailboxes of neighbors who have beautiful light displays, along with a note thanking them for bringing joy to the neighborhood.

I really do love being connected to the people who live near me.

Last summer, one of my favorite nights was when my neighbors Julie and Mike had an impromptu bonfire and invited anyone out walking by to stop for s’mores.

Every fall, our entire street gathers for our annual neighborhood potluck—everyone brings a dish and we talk for hours.

Linnea, another neighbor, has a small library in her front yard and even started a “painted rock snake” that neighbors can add to.

Most years, I host a neighborhood rummage sale with the ladies on my block. We set up a tent, share our treasures, and chat all day.

After my sister passed away last summer, I experienced firsthand the kindness of this community. Several neighbors dropped off cards, flowers, puzzles, coffee beans, even a handmade vase. Julie came over and planted a “Forget Me Not” plant in our yard—her mom’s favorite—so that her love could continue to grow here, too.

And then there’s Katie, my best friend and also the Director of Operations for Nourish. Every Tuesday, she comes over in her lounge clothes and slippers (I’m dressed the same), and we sit on my couch planning all things Nourish. It’s work, but it’s also soul-filling friendship.

I could tell you a story about nearly every neighbor I have. These relationships fill my heart and remind me, again and again, that connection doesn’t need to be grand to be meaningful.

In a world that can feel heavy at times, my heart is full. I see the beauty in the people around me.

Let’s not let the idea of “big gestures” hold us back from connecting with the people right in front of us. It’s waving hello on walks, exchanging phone numbers, sending a kind text, or sharing a hug when someone’s struggling.

We don’t have to take on the entire world.
We can start with the street we live on.

xoxo,

Jamie

Recipe of the Week

Zucchini Quiche with Bacon & Hash Brown Crust

I love breakfast foods.

Truly, I could eat them morning, noon, and night. (In fact, instead of a birthday dinner, I always go out for birthday brunch! 🥂)

This Zucchini Quiche with Bacon and Hash Brown Crust is absolutely delicious—comforting, hearty, and full of flavor. I first made it for dinner, but then found myself enjoying it again for breakfast and lunch the next day. It’s that good.

It’s the perfect weekend recipe to share with your family or neighbors—warm, golden, and nourishing in every bite.

Enjoy!
