The Surprising Benefits of Jealousy

I’m going to be honest. I spent a lot of last week feeling jealous.

Jealous of all the spring breakers in dreamy locations like Paris, Portugal, and Punta Cana. Jealous of the people who shed their winter coats for chic travel outfits. Jealous of those who spent time on the beach, explored museums, and went on adventures.

I was jealous because (1) I did not travel, (2) we didn’t have the budget to travel, and (3) even though we tightened our belts and didn’t travel, we were still over budget for the month. Ugh.

It’s at times like this that I wonder if I should go back to Corporate America to make the “big bucks.”

Here’s the thing: I love my job. I love my life. I love that I have so many things to be grateful for. And I usually live from a place of gratitude.

But not last week. I allowed myself to feel jealous.

And you know what? That wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Here’s Why Feeling Jealous Can Actually Be Good for You:

Jealousy Reveals What You Truly Desire
Jealousy is like a flashing neon sign pointing to the things you really want. Sometimes, we don’t even realize what we deeply crave until we feel that twinge of envy. Instead of suppressing it, use it as a clue. My jealousy over people traveling reminded me that experiencing the world is something that genuinely matters to me—and that I should start planning for it.

It Can Motivate You to Take Action
If jealousy is highlighting a gap between where you are and where you want to be, you can let it frustrate you or you can let it fuel you. Instead of staying stuck in envy, I’m choosing to use it as motivation. Maybe that means revisiting our budget, finding creative ways to bring in extra income, or setting a travel goal for next year.

It’s an Opportunity to Shift Your Perspective
Jealousy can trick you into thinking, they have it all, and I have nothing. But when you step back, you realize that’s not true. Instead of focusing on what I don’t have, I remind myself of what I do have—flexibility, meaningful work, and time with loved ones. Gratitude and jealousy can exist at the same time, but one of them always deserves the final word.

It Helps You Appreciate the Journey
Sometimes, jealousy is just an indication that you’re still on the way to where you want to be. And that’s okay! It doesn’t mean you’re failing—it just means you’re growing. Instead of resenting where I am, I’m learning to appreciate this stage of the journey.

So, if you’re feeling jealous, don’t beat yourself up. Let it teach you something. Let it inspire you. And then, let it go.

What’s something that’s made you a little jealous lately? And what is it trying to tell you?

xoxo,

Jamie
