Why Are We Often Afraid to Ask for Feedback?

I’m currently mentoring at a local university, where researchers are exploring how to turn their discoveries into products or services. In essence, they’re learning how to become entrepreneurs.

A core part of the program is Customer Discovery. We learn how to ask thoughtful questions, uncover insights, and understand people’s past behaviors to make informed business decisions. Talking to people can be eye-opening and transformative.

But let’s be honest – asking for feedback can be intimidating. When we’re deeply connected to our ideas, it’s tough to hear that they might need refining or that they’re not as universally appealing as we thought. It feels vulnerable, like our passion is being judged.

Yet, feedback is one of the most valuable tools we have. It can save us time, money, and heartache. And it can lead to breakthroughs we wouldn’t have discovered on our own. Plus, learning and growing? That’s the good stuff!

If asking for feedback feels daunting, here are a few tips to make it easier:

  • Take a Deep Breath. Remind yourself that feedback is a gift. It’s meant to help you grow, not tear you down.
  • Remember That Feedback Is Just Data. You don’t have to accept every piece of input. Evaluate it objectively and decide what resonates.
  • Listen Without Defensiveness. Resist the urge to justify or explain your perspective right away. Simply listen, reflect, and say thank you.
  • Ask Specific Questions. Instead of a general “What do you think?” try asking, “What would make this better for you?” or “What’s one thing you would change?”
  • Embrace Curiosity. Approach feedback with a sense of wonder. What can you learn that you didn’t see before?
