Finding Focus & Calm: My Journey with Noise
I’ve always been a highly sensitive person—someone who hears things in high definition. The drip of a leaky faucet, pen clicking, the chatter of people two tables away at a coffee shop… my brain picks it all up.

For a long time, I thought I just had to deal with these distractions, but then I discovered something that changed everything: color noise.

What is Color Noise?
Sound exists on a spectrum, and different “colors” of noise are named based on how their frequencies are distributed. Some are high-pitched, some are deep and rumbly, and each type of noise interacts with our brains in unique ways.

People hear noise differently based on their individual sensitivity, hearing range, and even their nervous system. What sounds soothing to one person might be irritating to another. Finding the right noise for you is personal—but once you do, it can be life-changing.

Brown Noise: My Go-To for Sleep & Relaxation
Brown Noise is my favorite. It has a deep, rumbling quality that feels layered and rich, almost like a rushing waterfall. It helps me tune out external sounds while also giving my brain something steady to focus on.

I listen to Brown Noise when I sleep, especially when I’m traveling and need to block out hotel noise. It’s incredibly calming, and without it, I’d be distracted by every little sound in my environment.

White Noise: A Subtle, Powerful Concentration Tool
I didn’t always realize how much White Noise was helping me until it turned off. In past office jobs, White Noise machines ran in the background to soften distractions. I didn’t really notice them—until one day, the system shut down, and suddenly, I could hear everything. The tapping of keyboards, muffled conversations, even the air conditioning clicking on and off.

Now, I use White Noise when I work in busy coffee shops or other public spaces. It blends out background sounds and helps me focus.

Pink Noise: Not for Me, But Many Love It
Pink Noise is a mix between White and Brown Noise. It’s softer and more balanced, like steady rain or rustling leaves. While I personally don’t reach for it, a lot of people find it amazing for sleep and memory retention. It’s often used in sleep studies to help improve deep sleep cycles.

Why Noise Matters
For highly sensitive people like me, noise isn’t just background—it’s everything. The right sound can be the difference between feeling relaxed or overstimulated, focused or distracted, well-rested or exhausted.

The spectrum of noise is so interesting, and I love learning more about how different sounds affect the brain. If you’ve never experimented with color noise, I encourage you to try it! Apps like Insight Timer, Noisli, and myNoise make it easy to explore.

Do you have a favorite noise? Have you ever noticed how sound affects you? Hit reply and let me know—I’d love to hear about your experience!
